ANSWERS

How does a lock work?
The key is used so all the bottom pins exactly align to what is known as the shear line. Once they all align the lock is then able to turn.

How do I pick a lock?
By using a tension tool the aim is to use as little tension as possible while lifting or raking each of the pins. The tension tool will hold the pins in place as you pick each one in turn. Once the last pin is set to the shear line the lock will open via the tension from the tension tool. You must always use very light tension or else the pins won't set correctly.

The keyway on a pin tumbler lock moves slightly then stops
This is caused by a security pin "false setting". See diagram below. This is normally caused by using too much tension but this affect does allow you to work out which pins are the security pins in a lock.
